Thread: Zig Zag again.

Oh yep. That's no secret. It's just that it has come and gone and nobody really cared about it. That whole area is built on now, I'd be surprised if there was anything of it still there.

I did a research project on that when I was at school. I grew up in Westleigh, the next suburb.The Thornleigh Zig Zag came down the hill and pretty much went through a mates house. I'm pretty sure all of the maps and information are still there and how the railway overlayed with the current streets. The Quarry is in the gully behind Thornleigh West Public School (well Oakleigh oval at least), its pretty steep going down the cul-de-sac there!

There is (was??) information in the Hornsby library regarding this, not a lot of it, but enough to know what was going on.

There are a number of former railways, not only round the state, but in the metropolitan area. One that is perhaps worth mentioning is the railway from Westmead to Rogans Hill, of which little evidence now remains.

There was another from Richmond up to Kurrajong called the Pansy, cos the engine was much smaller than the units that ran from Sydney to Richmond.

From memory it had 7 or 8 stops and was mainly used for running produce to Richmond/Flemington markets and tourists on the weekends. A large part of the track was washed away during the 50’s and it was never rebuilt. The remains of the bridge across the Hawkesbury are still visible at North Richmond and some relics at various locations but the rail corridor is gone for good…

I came across this a while ago and thought it was really interesting also. I'd love to see all that is going on underground in the Sydney System also, but I've never been drawn in the lucky dip to see it.

Last week I went on a sound and light show as part of Sydney Vivid - in the old tunnels that allowed trams to run from Wynyard station to the Bridge approaches.
