where as at aldi, you got your receipt you got a NEW winch!!!
Just something to consider here, not knocking the aldis winch or aldis or anything bought from aldis, BUT.....

When something you buy at aldis breaks, how are you just going to take your receipt there and get a new one?? Aldis buys a gazillion of one item, sells the lot within 2 weeks, and bang, stock all gone. VERY rarely they will get the same items again. Yes, this is the 3rd time they have had winches, but this is over quite a few years, and each time the winch has been different!!!!!!

Not sure here, but I think you will probably get either your money back, or a store credit, which still leaves you winch-less.

Where if you buy any other real brand winch - tigerz, ironman, etc etc, at least when it does go bang within the warranty period you will have backup, and out of warranty you will 100% know parts are available for it.

Personally I love aldis and we shop there every week. We save about $50 per week, which is certainly a lot more value than 4c / ltr docket. (Couple of $$ at most) And as mentioned before, check the labels on all their products. Almost everything is "Made by xxxxxx for ALDIs in Australia".

I've got the "rural" looking one pictured in the link in my signature if you're interested. Might have to put some heavy duty springs on the front though!

From what I've heard on other forums, Aldi keep a certain amount spares, etc. on hand to support warranty repairs/replacements.

Though I imagine that they contract it out to someone else, can't imagine that they staff a winch repairer as a permanent staff member.

You're right. The instructions on paper are simple. I've used this style winch before and it was easy. The problem occurs when you introduce the Aldi product. I think this was what I was trying to express in my earlier post.

I can push the top arm forward. there are no problems there.
Threading the metal winch rope, no success so far. this is the step that had the local SES bloke stumped as well.

In my experience, Aldi products don't perform to my expectations.

    Geoff,
I have the instructions in Chinglish which were supplied with the unit.
The instructions are not the problem.
The unit fails to comply with the instructions.
I'll bring it up to Firth Park on QB weekend. Whoever manages to move my Landrover 20ft and demonstrate to me how to correctly use this winch will be given a slab of VB stubbies. How is that for incentive.

    regards
    Mick

I took a punt on one of Aldi's $449 washing machines and it died after 8 months and they refunded in full (no replacements available) so more or less I got to flog someone elses washing machine for 8 months gratis. That's 8 months wear and tear that wasn't clocked up on the name brand one that replaced the Aldi one. It wouldn't have been all beer and skittles though if it had of died after 13 months.
    Cheers,
    Anthony

Yes that is one of my points. If your washing machine dies so what? It isnt going to harm anyone. Get your money back and go buy another, (before you start stinking haha)

If your winch dies / fails, it can potentially be a disaster, and could leave you in a bad situation, especially if you are out bush by yourself.

Of course any brand winch no matter how expensive can fail tho....

I would take a punt and get one if I had no winch and couldn't afford a brand name one, but I would be treating it extra carefully on hard recoveries. I think 4WD Action did winch comparo a while ago, including some ebay specials, and the gear sets died very quickly.....

    Which leads to this-
    How do winches fail?
