Ridge Ryder Cleaved hook, your thoughts.

Found this "Ridge Ryder" hook for $7.00 at Supper Cheap.
Now most of the cleved hooks( Usualy yellow)for cranes are $45.00+.

This is whats on my 8,000Lb winch now, never been happy with it.
I usualy slip a shackle in the cable and leave it loose(I know) or tape the end.

So when I saw this hook I thought I'd buy it and have a closer look at it.
It is the same size as the one on the winch, including the pin diameter.
Neither hook has any load rate stamped on it, both stamped "forged".
Acording to the packet it's rated to 7,800Kg breaking strain.
I was thinking of changing the split pin to a removable pin so I can remove it when I want.

My idea is to use this hook for single line pulls and remove it and use a shackle for double line pulls.

So whats your thoughts???

I wonder where they come up with the rating and if that rating complies with Australian Standards, You would think they would have to by law, or be liable if it failed at a lesser rated load and caused injury or worse.

Bet if you asked Super Cheap they would not be able to give a guarentee as to the rating?? They would proberly just start reading the box it came in as they did when I enquired about the rating and availibility of spare parts of the cheap hand winch they sell.

G.day Kyle, I'm no expert, but it was explained to me if your shackles and hooks etc. dont have the working load embossed on the shackle/ hook, eg W.L.L 4T, they do not comply to Aus. standards, use at your own risk.

I would take that hook back to Supercheap and ask what the SWL or WLL is, if they can't show you where it is stamped on the hook ask for your money back and buy a properly rated D or Bow shackle and use that on the end of your cable, if you want to buy "RATED" hooks/shackles etc. go to a rigging supply shop, better quality and more than likely cheaper, Regards Frank.

ARB sell hooks for their Warn winches separately for about $35.

Looks like a trip to ARB

Strange thing is the original hook has no load rating on it either.
Stamped as "Forged USA" and I belive it's the original fitted on the Warn cable
