i try everything possible to avoid using a snatch strap, infact i would have not even offered help due to the dickhead getting stuck in the first place

As annoying as the commentator was, at least he had the sense to tell people to stay back (even if they ignored him).

And the comment from 'Tom' of "...I've not used one before but I know the procedure..." was somewhat worrying. Joining the straps with a shackle and attaching them to the car over the tow ball? What else does this guy think he knows?

I don't claim to be an expert in recovery but these guys just demonstrated a clear lack of even the basics.

Sad to say, but I've seen it in Ireland too. The basic problem is, they don't have the same practical experience of vehicle recovery that somebody off-roading in Australia has. There's nowhere you can really go that you are going to get stuck, so the weekend's entertainment is heading off to the local abandoned quarry or mudflat and getting as stuck as possible, and seeing if you can get back out. And sadly, things like "I know the procedure" quite often means "I watched a youtube video of some guy in Australia doing this", or "I read this article in 4x4 Monthly...."

Reminds me of being 12-13 again, getting the old kinds wood paddock bashed stuck to buggery after rain and using rope, chains and an old Massey ferguson to get it out, between ropes and chains breaking and nearly flipping the Massey a few times I'm surprised i was never seriously hurt lol oh the good old days of she'll be right hahaha would never even contemplate anything like that these days.

A very frustrating aspect of Land Rovers in the UK is that you don't have to have a rich father to have a Disco like that. A 1000 GBP (or less!) will buy you a Disco 200 Tdi. This has resulted in the brand having a very poor image, especially as complete tools like these are able to buy them, break them and fix them for a fraction of what they cost in the rest of the world.

ive used a damper on my winch wire and it did it job by stopping it from hitting my car, i think they are worth the money

Realise it's an old thread, but the big thing for me, other than having an idiot filming it... is the fact he yelled out "Its okay lads, we snapped the one the ****ed!" Meaning he knew the thing was stuffed, before he tried to use it in recovery??
