Thread: how do you spool you synthetic rope onto your winch drum

Try checking with the Manufacturer of your rope, any excess friction on "nylon type" ropes will cause heating and heat causes meltdown. Nylon type ropes are very slippery and will pull into itself under load, so be cautious and check with the maker, Regards Frank.

I'm pretty sure that you criss cross after the first 2 or 3 turns of the drum, here a video of the process.

I lay the first layer on tight and neat. about halfway through I mark the rope with a double mark of red tape where the driver can easily see them by about a meter. I put another mark next to the fairlead. I then complete the layer

Once its complete I get some tape and mark the rope at the point where the driver can see it past the nose of the vehicle.

Next layer goes on neatly and it gets a different easily seen colour.

then criss cross the layers on till the top layer which goes on neatly

The markers in order give you your warning you're running out, This is as low as you should go, do not winch in if this marker is visable and the rope has taken tension.

Synthetic rope binds more so than steel to stop it you can cross wind its up to you.

How do you cross wind it under load??? Well Baz' video sort of shows it but it's not really under load, is it?
