Thread: old ramsey winch overhaul

I have one of these on my 130. Also given to me after it was submerged in the 2011 floods. Mine is a permanent magnet type motor. Seems good quality and though probably not nearly as powerful as the new asian ones I'd rather it stall than break, besides I have a snatch block.
Only problem has been solenoids and I ended up getting one of the modern solenoid pack units off ebay for $55 or so, reliable ever since.

I have one of those as well. It has been on 3 different vehicles. Still works perfectly. I have also replaced the solenoids but not with the newer type as no one could tell me how to wire them with just two connections to the motor of the winch. Mine has been very reliable however it gets more use at work than as a vehicle recovery winch.
As far as I know, parts are still available from the states however when I made enquiries about the getting a new solenoid box they just referred me to their Australian distributor. I ended up with a Superwinch solenoid box.

Took a little head scratching but battery + = "+" terminal
earth = "A" terminal
The motor terminals go to the "F" terminals

Did you strip it down after it was submerged? i plan to pull it appart this week end. anything i need to look out for?

Times were pretty busy after the flood so I didn't have much time to give it, the neighbour who gave it to me said it only got used once, to recover a small car when the handbrake was left off, out of gear and it rolled away and off an embankment so no wear issues, I just changed the grease, checked brushes, left the armature out and in a dry place for a week. They're easy to work on, the brushes are even in the end cap so don't need to be held out for the commutator. As said the solenoids gave trouble (sometimes it would go out but not in, sometimes the opposite) but since the solenoid conversion it's been thoroughly dependable.
