Most hand winches are rated at lower figures that vehicle mounted winches, but have larger diam cable. Never heard of anybody breaking the cable on a handwinch - only shearpins.

Seems to be a lot of false info out there about the dangers of breaking wire cable.
First up, it is wise to keep away from a working wire cable, also a good idea to place a safety blanket over cable.
Why, because when a wire cable fails it does not often fail instantly at one particular spot.
Usually the first sign of a wire cable about to part is a single wire (or a few together) start to rapidly unwind (from their twist) with a corresponding whipping sound.
The wire/s will travel quickly away from the break point unravelling toward their respective ends of the cable.
That's why a safety blanket is needed to restrain those fast travelling sharp wires.
If a cable broke instantly at one spot, no safety blanket would restrain it.
Wire cables usually brake at damaged points, kinks, broken wires (spiders) or at a non thimble hook eye.
Snatch blocks cause kinks, too small a wheel dia., groove too wide or too narrow, also binding and improper lay on winch drum.
So remember if you have 50 ft. of winch cable out and it breaks dead centre you will have up to 25' of single wires whizzing around your head at break the sound barrier speeds, or if it breaks at one end you could have 50' of razor wire flailing about.
Gist of the story, KEEP WELL AWAY.
BUT if you're observant, and you should be you will see the early signs of a single or few wires starting to unravel, you should be able to halt the winching or get the **** outta there, chains and synthetic ropes give no pre-failure warnings, Regards Frank.

Hand winches, all 4X4 shops will have them, I doubt that there is much between them. I have two Tirfors, I have never used them in a recovery as they are a deterrent from getting bogged. Just when you don't have one is when you get bogged. I have used mine to straighten old sheds starting to lean over, pull shrubs out of the ground.
If you are after a new one Nobles rigging supplies in Melb will have a good product, when looking for a second hand one try and get one with an original handle. A big piece of water pipe will do but it is heavier than the purpose built handle.

Subscriber+1 for the Tirfors , I have 2 of them ...A T16 which is bullet proof & does what ever you want with ease [ on the winches part ] & a T7 which I have not used to recover a vehicle , but I suspect it would handle the job if used correctly .The T16 is a lump of a thing that you would not want to carry very far .
Be warned, they require a good deal of phisical effort .
Both are old & 2nd hand when I aquired them , but both have been faultless .
Tirfor all day long from this camp too!! Stowed under the floor of the 101, my T516 goes everywhere the 101 goes. Re purchase, Gumtree is your friend!! Here's one I found just now.. There are several in several states.
