Cyclist killed after hitting parked car in Elwood
May 4, 2017
A CYCLIST has died after crashing into the back of a parked car while cycling with friends in Elwood this morning.
The South Yarra man was leading a group of around 10 cyclists along the Marine Parade bike lane at about 7am when he hit the car.
Distraught friends called paramedics who performed CPR but were unable to save the 51-year-old man, who died at the scene a short time later.
Reports suggest the man may have suffered a heart attack as a result of the impact injuries.
Police are in the process of notifying his next of kin.
They have organised counselling for the man’s friends who witnessed the accident.
Ros Zervos was on her way to work and witnessed the aftermath of the crash.
“As I was driving to work, I noticed ambulances and police cars,” she said.
“There on the footpath lay, what appeared to be a cyclist, with a paramedic desperately administering CPR.
“It was a distressing sight ... My thoughts immediately went to that person’s family. It’s very sad.”
The Prahran Highway Patrol will prepare a report for the coroner.
