...well yes, and you can only get two new Defenders now for $260K AUD, when only a few short years ago you could buy five for the same money.
...dare I say, there is a bigger societal mental issue at play here - it’s called late capitalism - and the fantasy of exponential growth and consumption on a planet of finite resources and increasingly fragile ecosystems as a result. The logical conclusion of course is that humanity implodes as a result of exploiting our homeland (earth), which is the trajectory we’re collectively on. ...the $260K Range Rover (and its progeny - new Defender, Disco, et al) is merely the metaphor; a supremely capable and exclusive climate controlled human-made escapist machine fallacy - with nowhere inhabitable left to go.
Curiously the ethos that once guided Land Rover - a pragmatic, affordable, multi-function, every persons vehicle, which finished production in 2016, has now flipped fully in line with the late capitalist ethos of elitism, urban centrism and environmental exploitation. ...surely the polar opposite of the reason for being of a 4x4 vehicle?
Agreed the mass consumerism that a good chunk of the world is in is certainly a detriment to the planet and everything living. So I guess Jaguar Land Rover can't be singled out, but it would be nice if they had a bigger focus on reliability engineering rather than pushing BS models such as this.
