    just starting a 57

hi I have just started doing up what I think is a 57 CKD after much scrubbing have found a number 113700531. I have taken all the panels off and now need someone to have a look at the brakes / suspension and motor. any suggestions of a sympathetic mechanic in inner Melbourne?.Or any suggestions of a recomended next step now I have all panels off and most surface rust ground of frame. cheers Nick P.S I bought the car from queensland on ebay for $630.

    Laurie s1

Hi , I have not that long ago finished re -building my 57 s1 113701415 , I found I could get all parts with Australia, except 2lt engine parts, I was lucky as it has the original one still running OK, some crank case fumes, eng no 111713372, a real enjoyable project , my little landy was used in an Australian movie called SEPTEMBER, set in W.A in the 1960s on a wheat farm, good luck with the project.Iwould post a photo, dont know how.

Hi guys I have started a blog at Landrover this has all photos of restoration and reference picks. Forgive me but I am turning the 57 in to a bit of a rat rod with whitewall tyres etc.

just my 2c on those whitewalls
are they flappers? if those tyres arent load rated and they have flappers
    the flappers will fall out
keep in mind the landrover is a light truck

    Nick,

mate thats a nice straight looking s1, and the rear canopy is actually pretty cool!..

I really think it would be a terrible shame to destroy that by trying to make it look like an american truck, because in the end it'll just look like a landrover someone tried to make look like an american truck!!!

Get an old valiant/dodge and "yankize it" maybe? A dodge or an inter ute would much better be suited to change/adapt as youve indicated...and theyre about the place... if you wanna small one find a morris or austin maybe but I reckon its gonna look a bit cruddy...

much better to retore yours to original specs... (whitewalls were always for "flash" cars not for work utes, lets be honest the s1 is a tractor with a body so white walls seems an unusual choice!)

in the end, your car, your choice... but as your comment states.
"So I opted for a $620 ebay spend instead. I have always loved Early Land rovers. I love the simplicity of function which results in form. i love the Tonka toy feel of them and the the fold down windscreen. A four wheel motor bike realy. I also am attracted to the bolt on bolt off nature and the aluminium panels ( i have a long relationship which continues in other cars with Rust )"

better to pass a working operational part of history on to the kids rather than a piece of tinkering?

you paid a great price (well done) youve got a great car (again well done) and all the parts are still available... its got to be worth thinking about keeping it original...

anyway my 2c (that makes about 20c this week!!)
    watching with interest.

    cheers
