I've got two 80'' bonnets with wheel carriers, and both have got the 3/8'' clamp bolts, and not the 1/2" which were used from later SI models onwards.

The spare wheel support was an optional extra in the 80". Part number 231282 for 6.00 16 and 231588 for 7.00 16 the main difference being a block that went under the clamps. For 7.00 16 tyres if you use the later clamps with one long side then you don't need the block.

The weight of the spare wheel on the bonnet tends to fracture the little alloy supporting frame under the bonnet skin. I would be looking for a bonnet with the mount already fitted and keep the undamaged original bonnet as a spare.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Lotza, are you able to confirm (or deny!) the part number 307235 being for the later model clamps to fit my 1958 109"? Once I find that bit out, I'll be trying to track down a pair.

    TIA

I surpose I could take the spare mount of several 86,107 bonnets and use that on one of my 80" bonnets

Will check all the numbers when I get home.

The threads on the original supports frequently stripped out and hence the later type was often used as a replacement.

If you look in the Series 1 workshop manual there is a template for fitting the support and where to drill the large holes for the bolts to pass through.

They are recommended to be fitted with mushroom headed solid rivets as they are stronger than pop rivets. I have even seen them attached with self tapping screws, and I have also seen the whole support come away from the bonnet and the spare wheel depart the vehicle, particularly when fitted with pop rivets or screws.

There are also the rubber buffers, on the S1 they are rectangular and of two different heights. The thin ones for the centreline fore and aft of the support and the thick ones on either side of the support. Later models had the buffers mounted at 45 degrees to the support and were all of the same thickness.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    bonnets

Around here , they all seemed to have been delivered with the bonnet spare mount as standard. Come to think of it, I don't think I've never seen a local 80" bonnet without the spare mount .
