    wheelbase challenge #2

    Can anyone help me work out if this is an 86 or 88?

    No chassis number, pictures are a bit rough, and they don't show the bits I usually look for to tell the difference (steering wheel centre, bulkhead corners, steel radiator panel, dumb irons, etc).

    The only thing I can see is the horn - round type mounted on chassis x-member, not 'trumpet' type under the bonnet. Does this make it an 86?

    Going by he bonnet rubber buffers and the bonnet arm being on the left i would say most likely an 86"

    Id say early 86" due to rear x-member has no large holes but only the 4 smaller ones for the towing plate. Also it has a ag bar, which was done away with by 1955 and made optional.

    New addition to the family safely home now.


    No bulkhead plate and haven't found chassis number yet, but definitely 86
    • chassis solid except for base of rear crossmember
    • bulkhead pretty much rust free, minor dings only
    • horn button broken, dipswitch there but weathered
    • original brake master cylinder, fluid reservoir holding fluid
    • spings and swivel hub housings appear OK
    • gearbox/transfer case all there - condition unknown
    • remains of siamese bore block - I think - oil filter to left of block at front, not on right at rear?
    • right front mudguard is from an 88, bonnet from 86, left mudguard from 86, extended at rear to match other side - nice work too
    • have been told a small id card holder mounted on bulkhead next to steering wheel is typical of vehicles used by Hydro - maybe?
    Dilemma now is whether to strip parts for others, or build on this one. I did get it for parts, but am starting to like its 'character'. Just nice to have.
