As far as I know, it was done that way on the assembly of all of the early 86's / 107's, I think they where all the same until about 1957 with the introduction of the 88" and 109".Quote:

The 80" and the 53 build 54 86" have N , S, E, & West pads with the side pads thicker to make up.
Later 86,s and 88,s have diagonal pads of equal thickness.
