1. Not certain, but I'm pretty sure it was during Series 1 production, probably about mid fifties.
2. No problem with the gears handling it, engine? The 2 litre should be OK on an 80, 86 or 88, but would struggle on a 107. Probably not a good idea for the 1600. But lack of power would simply mean you use it less in fourth gear - don't forget it also provides a split between 3 and 4, for those hills where fourth is too high but you would like a bit less revs in third.
