Just get an angle grinder and remove the lip off a later head!
Hi All
This is my first thread on this site but here goes.
A friend of mine has a 1949 with a 48 side plate engine in it
it has been fully restored but it is having a head problem it has a 48 head on it. So we are looking to source another 48 head.
just in case someone does not know there is a difference between a 48 head and a standard 1.6 litre head.
if anyone can help
all the best

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
hi there
and yes like the one but i think he would prefer a 48 head not a later one
but i will talk to him
thanks

Most people wouldn't actually know the difference and seeing it's a 1949 vehicle, why be so pedantic?
The side plate engines were still occasionally being fitted into vehicles as late as the early 1950 models (built in 1949).
Is this friend Ian T? If it is tell him Diana said the vehicle is no longer a Land Rover but some sort of hybrid because it's got the wrong model engine in it!

Most people don't know the difference between a 48 and a 49, heck even one of our specialists here in Perth doesn't know the difference between a 48 and a 50...
It's the small details that add up though, these items make the difference between a rebuild that looks good and a rebuild that is 100% mickey mouse and can be used as a reference for other vehicles. 1949 vehicles still need to be preserved and restored correctly even if they are a year younger than their older brothers.
Good luck finding a head, if you do come across a complete side plate engine I am looking for one. And it's for a 1949, not my 1948
If I hear of something over this way I will let you know.
Andy.

Hi Ian
Good to see you're still looking in!
We have only acquired the one 1948 head in recent times and that is being fitted to the 860159 engine. But will keep an eye out.
