Yes they are very important, without them the leak will not be distributed evenly across the rear of sump. May result in single point dripping.
Have some new ones somewhere give me 48h to dig them up and I will post all the dimensions.

on both the 2L engines i have the sumps have been installed without using the L shaped rear seal {pn 231480}
Q. replace it ? or are they of limited usefulness
im asuming that the packing strip{pn231479} is simply a peice of steel with the 3 holes drilled.
The spacers {pn 231478} are a different story as if i can find a sutable peice of tube i dont have the hight of them .
Anyone have any they can mesure for me??
ps the sump has minimal leaks
cheers mark

I wonder Dennis, was that said in a slightly sarcastic way?
Would the oils not always drop from one (lowest) point?
Is the bar more of an attempt to equilise pressure over the gasket and thus avoid bending the pan and thus make it less susceptible to leaking?
Just a thought..
