Sorry to disappoint those hole counters. They are there for mounting a sun visor externally.

This is what I have with using guard mount mirrors , 20180619_113632_001.jpg20180619_113618.jpg I can't win I rotated these so they were the correct way but still rotated onto side. These are the std Mirror arms that can be bought on Ebay but the plastic mirror heads are useless they shake & will not stay were adjusted , these are metal mirror heads I found on Ebay out of the US & they work well. The arms are only down so the trafficators will clear them.
Here is one up the correct way DSCN4320.jpg I also took this photo of someones when I was trying to work out which way to go.IMG_6519_zpsetbub7pm.jpg

Interestingly, the semaphore indicators have never been legal in Australia, and as far as I know have never been fitted to any Landrovers sold here (possibly on the Tickfords), although they were fitted to a large proportion of the English cars sold here from after the war up to the late fifties, as well as a lot of Continental cars, including VWs.

I don't use them when driving , they are too dangerous , nobody looks for them , I only use them at car shows if any one asks if they work or what they are. They were STD on the two P3 Rovers I owned also a couple of Morris Minor's I had.
