I did something simlar 20 years ago in a series 3 diesel, in summer - could just about smell the hot gear oil as I watched yours.

I have found a replacement for the unobtainable gearbox needle bearings 91466 . Even Dunsfold's had run out of these .
These are the ones on the lay shaft small diameter in Series 1 's . SKF 94628 is the same and there are several others including a Cat Part see the very handy link below . may come in handy with other bearing match ups.

While attempting to adjust the spring on the brake light switch yesterday I was reminded of a "get me home" fix that became permanent.
I had noticed the brake pedal flopping about and on investigation saw the circlip holding things together on the shaft had decided to go walkabout.
The solution eventually was to remove the grease nipple, screw in a setscrew with two nuts holding the large washer in place. It worked so well I left it there.
I gather it survived the trip or you would have mentioned it.
You will need to remove it to replace it with the grease nipple to grease the shaft.
Then you can either refurbush the groove for a new circlip or replace the setscrew.
On replacement it is important that the nuts are run back up the screw then the screw made tight bottoming in the hole or it will work loose. The first nut is then run down against the washers then the second nut used to lock it.

Didn't notice that but will look into it tomorrow morning. The gearbox is almost complete just waiting on the lay shaft to arrive from Sydney. I fitted a reconditioned hand throttle today . New gear box mounts are comming from Dunsfolds. I'm still driving Borumbah around while we are reconditioning the box out of my 88. Was the clutch replaced at all or do you remember what it was like. I have a spare in the 88 if necessary.

Hi Mike. I had the clutch out and the flywheel surfaced only a few months ago. The plate thickness was near new so put it back in.
I thought the gearbox mounts would have been OK for a while yet.

I need a set for the 88 anyway so if the mounts are good i will reuse them. Good news on the clutch it feels pretty good to drive. When I picked it up from your place it had 750 miles on the clock now has 4500 miles on the clock and going strong.

I swapped the air cleaner from the 88 to the 109 today. Bead blasted the lid and bowl and carefully cleaned up the body . Now all painted in gloss black and hopefully dry by morning. Now here's a question every restored Series 1 I see has a black air cleaner but under the black paint on the 88 cleaner I found paint the same colour as the body Air force grey. Were they originally painted same colour as the body? :)

could that be undercoat? as far as I know all were black.

Hi Keith
I pulled the brake pedal out replaced the thrust washer between the two pedals and the correct spacer and refitted the circlip and grease nipple. Now works like a new one. Fortunately I had the parts on hand . I will carry a spare circlip with me as there is a lot riding on on little clip.

Bitterly cold last night so found a way to finish drying my paint on the air cleaner.
