My 49 built 50 model 80" that i have named Millicent
Chassis Number R06101688
vehicle R06101688 was dispatched 'In' 13/09/1949 and dispatched 'out' on 11/10/1949 to Annand and Thompson, Newstead, Brisbane.
It was in a batch of 44 vehicles and just before the CKD stage so all were assembled in England, including yours apart from, R06101685 and R06101686 which were CKD's and obviously some sort of trial pair as CKD's were away usually in lots of 6. So it would have been dark green, no doubt about that.
lights thru the grill
Engine Number 57101979
1955 2 litre Spread-bore
Wide transom and sprung seat mounts
She has finally made it to AULRO Central, all be it in a few bits but she is here.
I plan to do a rebuild, not a concourse restoration this time round as i don't have the money or the time. I would like to have her on the road for October 2014 when she will be 65 i believe.
when bought by her previous owner a few years ago from Bundaberg she looked like this

when she arrived here the other day she looked like this

now she waits patiently in the corner while i acquire the rest of the bits to rebuild her they way i want.

I have been collecting the bits to get her back looking like she should and have acquired a few of the harder to get bits in the last few weeks, much to my wife's dismay.
I got these a few weeks ago

i still have a few things to find including the correct steering wheel and center, the lights to go behind the grill and a few smaller things.
hoping to get serious with her in the next few weeks.

first thing i will be getting stuck into is the firewall. it has a rusty top and severe cracking where the steering box bolts up.
i have a donor firewall that is good where i need it to be so i will be cutting it up to get the bits i need to get millicent's back on deck.

i had a couple of hours to myself this afternoon so i spent some time checking out the condition of the firewall and pondering ways to repair it.
it has bad rust under where the windscreen rubber lay, so i set about stabilising it till i can repair it. Had to scrape off heaps of old silicone and some other sort of sealant to get a decent look at it and it is a tad worse than i expected. i wire brushed it and then drowned it in ranex rust converter and have left it to dry. will give it another dose during the week and then empty a can or two of red oxide over it.

if i can get something like this folded up (but with a rounded edge on the top fold), i reckon the top of the firewall will be a bit easier to get sorted. just have to find out what thickness the firewall is, tho it seems to be about .8mm thick and the folded section would need to be just under 1.6m long.
will ring a couple of local sheet metal shops to see if it is possible to get done locally.
i have another 80" firewall from the era that i was hoping to use to replace the fractured steering box support bracket but alas it has been modified to take the later steering box. the things you don't notice

anyone have a decent dry 50 model firewall laying around they are interested in parting with or a firewall with the drivers side steering box support bracket intact?
anyone want what appears to be a 51 firewall with a modified bracket in good nick, good top section but with some rusty bits lower down?

Dave,
Your modified steering bracket would easily removed from the good bulkhead with the use of a 1mm cutting disk on an angle grinder and cleaned up with care and patience , you would hardly know it was ever there.
