Thread: Series 1 Paint Colours

Your best bet is to get a sample of anywhere, chassis, under the flap for the gearbox inspection panel, seat base, somewhere that hasn't seen daylight for a long time. We have had success with matching the original colour. Our local paint place has all our codes there for when we want to do touch ups for ours and the others we have painted

It seems that pigments have changed over the years so even if you find the formula the paint supplier may not be able to get the correct pigments.

I've just managed to get a 70's colour matched but I still had to take a sample in so that they could be sure.

Thanks for the info. I have found a sample of origonal colour not faded under the Land Rover Badge on the rear of the tray and will have my paint suplyer match it.

I have found this paint that is available off the self in some tractor dealers here in Australia, I may order some to try and if it isn't close enough the chook house will turn a derivative of Bronze Green.

Which colour will I paint it?

The colour of the 1954 86" Land Rover, I learnt to drive in had three coats of paint, the last coat is the shade that I have locked into memory, but is very different to the original base and different again to the original finish coat.

Looking at the rear tub of that 86" that I now own again after nearly forty years, the first coat could have been a undercoat and the second the factory finish ( or was this a demo Land Rover, one of the batch originally trialled by the Army and painted for that purpose? *). The third slightly darker coat ( less yellow tint ) would have defiantly been applied just prior to sale when the Land Rover was sold off by the Hydro Electric Commission of Tasmania.

The Deep bronze green as applied to the S2 and 2A just wouldn't look right, but the 'Spareco' mix of 'Ascot Bronze Green' is pretty close to what I like, as it is a lighter version of Bronze Green and close to the Series one's original finish coat.
I will be getting a 'Spareco' spray can to try and then look at comparing it with an original sample in the broad daylight.

By buying a known product off the shelf, to me seems a way of standardising the paint tint and makes it possible for anyone to order in the nearly correct tint paint when the distance involved in getting to a paint shop can be a problem.

* Not all the first early 86" Land Rovers had the white painted stencilled sign, found on the handrail of the dash in front of the steering column, it read something like " Max speed 45 M.P.H ", that sign was found on the Demo Army Land Rovers.
