Don't be too scared of a Siamese bore, rebuilt one over twenty years ago and they are fine. For the type of driving a restored 49 is likely to do, it won't your daily driver or be driven around Australia at highway speeds.
At worst, you might have to change a head gasket (although I have never had to) and change the oil a bit more often, no big deal if you have completed a rebuild.

This was discussed on the LRSOC site in the UK and they basically came up with what Heley said.
Keep in mind though the spreadbore has a better oil filter system and a cheaper starter motor. The starter requires a modification to the bell housing to fit though as I am pretty sure as the starter bendix is longer so you may or may not want to do this.

The Siamese bore spacing was a necessary compromise when the bore was increased to raise the capacity to 2.0l, but experience with the engine showed cylinder wall scuffing due to poor cooling where the cylinders were joined when the engines were operated at sustained high rpm. Since this was not expected to happen with the Landrover, the engine was deemed satisfactory for that use.

But they wanted to use the engine also in Rover cars, where it would be a problem, and the spread bore engine was developed to meet this requirement. This meant changing a lot more engine components however, so it took time. Obviously, as soon as this engine was in production it superseded the Siamese engine in Landrovers.
