Thread: My 1950 80" "Barn Find'

    My 1950 80" "Barn Find'

    Gday there fellow Landy aficionado's thout I would show you the 'Barn Find" that I just bought. It is a 1950 80" that looks to be all original that has spent the last 40 years tucked away in a shed on a Western New South Wales property. I came by it via a fourm that I frequent that manly deal with old Fords Chevs & holdens. The owner's son put up a post about asking roughly what it would be worth as they really getting quite desperate due to the drought. They were inundated by countless people giving the owner stupidly low offers hell one bloke offered a slab for it (carton of beer) I contacted the son and said that its quite a desirable vehicle and pointed out that it should have a chassis Number starting of with 061XXXX & sent him in the right direction to find out what its true value is. I few days later his father contacted me & gave me the vehicles history & how his own father bought it and had used it for many years doing farm chores & driving around the pilliga scrub till the fuel pump gave up so they parked it up and bought a newer landy.
    I have to say what I paid for this little gem is in fact the most I have for a series 1 "project" but I want to be fair to the farmer as the drought is really hitting them hard hell even the bank will no longer give them any money for water for his stock.
    The vehicle its self is like a time warp and due to the dry climate & being sheded has no rust in the chassis or firewall. The engine has good compression still havnt tried to get it running yet. The bodywork is in pretty good order thou the hard top has recived a bit of a thump on the front gal capping, best of all the gauges and instruments are intact including the 20/20 amp meter.
    My plans are to restore it mechanically where needed and maybe pull out the worst of the damage on the body but wont be painting it and be more of a sympathetic preservation then an all out restoration as it has only travelled 53,563 original miles.
    Oh I had forgot the important numbers ha ha.

    How cool is that! I'll be watching for your story of getting it running. Fully agree with the "sympathetic preservation" route.

    That's certainly a sweet and sour story, --- I remember only too well the grief of our family during a drought our small property experienced 1981 -1985 and understand that farming family's hope that things will soon change for the better.

    What a find! Check the oil levels, find a radiator hose ( they were probably cut to safeguard the engine during the frosts ), battery, give the fuel pump a tweak to get it working and fresh petrol in the tank. Press the starter and take it for a drive around the yard.

    If you want, send me a PM with your address details and I can give you some replacements for those missing tyre support rubbers and screws, taken off a couple of spare damaged 80" bonnets I have here.
