Have you looked at the chassis for the number or the ID plate?

I'm trying to get a 55 swb through full rego in Canberra without having to pay a visit to Dickson (the local pits... ha)
My local mechanic thought he could get the inspection done however after a call to ACT Rego, we have now got hung up over the VIN. The registration people insist it has to have one... despite every car prior to around 1980 not having one.
The vehicle was previously registered in SA where the papers says VIN/Chassis No: Not Recorded. It has been out of rego now for 6 months or so. I'm not sure if could just submit the chassis number as an alternative? I have had a good look around the forum and did find some encouragement from other's experiences, however if there is any one from Canberra who can offer specific advice on how to get this through, I would be most grateful.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I have had a casual look around for the chassis stamp, without luck so far. The chassis had a fair bit of rust so not sure how much was cut out and replaced. I'm about to head out with a torch and see what I can find.
A conversation with my mechanic mate said that a conversation with the rego people might be cut short if I can prove that the chassis is stamped! I have my motivation now.
Appreciate the quick response, cheers - Simon
I hope you find it Simon. That pic is from a Series I

SupporterG'day simon, my 80in was on full act rego, chassis stamp was enough to get it thru, no need for a new vin
Thanks, I thought would be a few that had made it with just the chassis stamp.
Had a fruitless search last night for the number. Lots of the chassis was replaced at some stage, particularly sections forward of the engine mounts where some 86" were stamped (apparently Vic delivery).
Rear spring hangers look original however nothing obvious there. I'll have another go this evening with wire brush and sandpaper.
Cheers
Australian assembled Series Landrovers had the chassis number on the LH back rear spring hanger, not where published UK and European descriptions show them.

I have a couple of CKD 86" Land Rover's here, they have their serial number's stamped on top of the chassis rail, just inside the bottom LHS hole of the radiator support panel.
.

I suspect that's where it used to be.. all nice new steel there now! I'm positive mine is CKD 86", chassis stamp on the bulkhead indicates correct dates et.
I'll have another good dig around both the LHS back rear spring hanger and the chassis rail. I was looking along the front to rear chassis, near the radiator support panel, however I'll check every bit of chassis around there just in case.
Thanks again for the help! Cheers
If the chassis no. is on the ID plate, can you have it stamped onto the nice new steel on the chassis?
If it's on the plate, do they need to see the chassis itself?
