You don't need to do anything to the head - the exhaust valves are in the block! And you already have steel valve seats, and while they may need replacing, this should not be necessary just because you are running on unleaded. It is possible that new valves and seats would be better material than those already in the block, but I would not bet on it.

Thanks John - you're absolutely right about the head (if there was an emoticon with a dunce's cap I'd insert it here). It runs OK so I'm happy not to fiddle with it and sounds as I don't need to worry.
It sounds as if I could just run it on straight unleaded, but is this what is recommended or is adding a lead substitute to the tank worthwhile?

The only advantage of adding lead substitute would be to help the financial situation of the company supplying it, although it might help you to feel warm inside.

He's in Melbourne. There's bugger all ethanol in the 91 octane ULP.

I think the problems are more related to long term storage & damage to fuel tanks.
Mind you, I've had a lot of problems recentlywith stale petrol (not ethanol blend) gumming up valves in fuel pumps and pick up pipes......
