Welcome, any photos of the vehicle?
Greetings fellow travellers.
So I recently purchased my first ever Land Rover and its a 1955 Series 1 with a Series 2 engine and a few other quirks, one being the instrument bezel is home done I was wondering what year the design changed and the correct one for my vehicle? Thanks in advance
Welcome, any photos of the vehicle?
sure
You should be able to get the correct instrument panel fairly easy. Quite common and on ebay ect.
the front panel between the grille and the bumper was not on the series 1 yet it does look like it should be there.
The fuel tank and battery box in the back is a bit strange, but not very hard to change.
Overall it looks quite good.
Ok appears first to be fixed is the roof it sustained several rips in a heavy downpour last night

Are you going to repair the current canvas, get a new one or go a ute cab or hard top?
Not sure what ill replace it with just yet , need to see whats affordable. The canvas is not in great condition, its off a g60 anyway as far as I can tell. and held together with cable ties and hope.
The Series 1 was replaced by the Series 2 in 1958. The instrument panel on yours and the one on early Series 2/2a is virtually identical, and even up to the end of Series 2a production in 1971, there was little difference except for the separation of light and ignition switched and going to a key start. It seems a previous owner of yours has made the enlarged panel so as to accommodate extra gauges and switched. A more elegant solution is probably to fit a separate panel bridging the space (or part of) between the panel and the steering column.
Looks an interesting vehicle.

So it appears i have a series 1,2,3 . Series 1 (plate no 57660580) with a series 2 engine (block number 151990502) and a series 3 gearbox,. This ought to be interesting....
