Thread: Tracing engine and chassis numbers

If you go up to the "Series Land Rovers" level and scroll down a bit you'll find the first "stickied" thread is about research tools available.
Also, if you post your chassis number here several people can look on lists they have and possibly provide information.

Thanks - I did have a bit of a look through that thread but couldn't find more than CalVIN told me.

CHASSIS Number 113800295 - so it is a '58 RHD SWB 88''petrol CKD (from CalVIN)

Engine Number 17605678

there's some info in the back of the 1948-58 Series 1 Workshop manual :


series 1 88 petrol LR CKD R.H.D Car and Chassis commencing number 11380001 Engine commencing number 111800001.


I can't see an engine no. commencing 176 - but someone with better lists than I have will be along to put you right shortly I would imagine.

Could it be a typing error ? The engine numbers usually have 9 digits.

Sorry to have misled you. I've just checked my S1engines ,and some of them only have 8 digits.

The only way(s) I could figure out as establishing with certainty what the original engine truly was [as opposed to a 'period correct which is likely the original'- which can be determined by the number sequence] were either:
a) know the full history from a trusted source (eg it was in the family since new, or some kind of similar story)
b) if your car's original rego can be determined- by tracing those records (as the rego has both chassis and engine numbers listed).


neither method uses solely the internet though!

I've scoured the planet looking for a resource similar to that for Chassis id - but I don't think such a thing exists, just a generalisation as you mention. Interesting re the Rego history.

Thanks all - I have taken the plunge and bought the vehicle - I will complete the research when I have it and have time. Now just have to get it to Perth!
