Thread: Is there a Definitive S1 Steering box rebuild guide

What year ? I think the earlier ones had a different steering box design.

What's wrong with yours ? The later ones are easy to adjust & re-seal as long as nothing is badly worn.

If your S1 steering box is worn to the point of needing a rebuild , there isn't much you can do yourself to remedy the situation. The box has a bronze ( early ) or steel nut running on a worm and it's a specialist job that requires the type of equipment that most of us don't have. A chap in the UK was reconditioning them on a exchange basis but it cost a bomb.

The other option is fitting a S2 box , a much more robust design . You have to do a few mods to fit the S2 box but a few people have managed to do it.

pull it apart.
find the worn bits.
pull them out
repair or replace the worn out bits
put it back together
put some oil in it
put it back in.

works for an amazing number of landrover sub assemblies.

heres the modern car version. in case you want to do something a bit more modern.

pull it out
throw it
put in a new on.

Series 1 steering box parts are made from unobtanium .... we are talking about 60 + year old vehicles . The S2 has a totally upgraded design (recirculating ball) no parts will change over.

Depends on the Series 1 - change was about 1956, not with the introduction of the Series 2. But the Series 2 (and 3) box has a longer steering column, so the box is not really interchangeable, although a lot do, and put up with the wheel being closer.

Steering Services in London, U.K. used to do the Burman box rebuilds, but the last I heard years ago, was that he had spares left for a very limited number of cars and had no plans to make any more.

The Burman style was never a good one, because wear could not be adjusted-out. The recirculating ball is much better and it is worth considering a conversion. In addition S1's from about 1952 had an aluminium steering box casing, which cracks, so inspect yours closely,

Here's someone in the UK repairing steering boxes but I dread to think of the cost to ship there & back plus the repair Series One, II, IIa, 3 and Steering Relay

Interesting that they repair original steering relays (sums up the current pattern parts maybe ?).
