May be worth getting to the area under those 4 numbers as the chassis number wasn't all that deep, looks a bit
Like bottom of a 6 on the right hand end there? Give it a good wire brush or even better sand paper so as not to damage it

If it is a home market model, the number should be on the RH front chassis rail. If it is Australian, it will be on the LH back rear spring hanger. It is possible that the number you have is a number assigned by a local authority*, but in this case, it should have a letter prefix such as 'Q' for Qld, 'N' for NSW or 'VP' for Vic. Police. I would clean up the area around the number you have, and also look for a number in the other locations.

Just as an aside, VIN did not exist for Series 1 - this was introduced during Series 3 production. The number on earlier Landrovers is a chassis number, and is not unique, only unique to the particular model or manufacturer.

*Local authorities will assign a number to a vehicle when the original number cannot be found or when a 'one-off' is constructed.

As the vehicle sits now it has an 86" wheelbase. I can not see anywhere obvious, at this stage, where the wheelbase could have been altered.

I will have a bit more of a dig around tonight (to hot outside just now) and see if I can locate any further numbers.

Can you put some pictures of the vehicle up Mate - theres a few people on here that can probably tell you what it is just by looking at it!
