Gentlemen, I have a 1953 S1 80” and I was changing the tie rod ends on the longitudinal steering tube last weekend, when my grand daughter, who loves playing in the old Landie moved the steering wheel. When I reassembled everything, I found that I had uneven left and right locks. Can anyone help with the correct procedure for re-establishing the correct setting?
I was really careful to maintain the correct length of the steering tube, so the problem seem to stems from the angle that the drop arm and relay arms were reassembled at.
What I did , once I realised that the wheel had been moved , was to locate the mid- point of the steering lock that should represent straight forward. I then set the wheels to straight forward and reconnected the steering box and relay box drop arms to what looked to be “about right”. The steering box drop arm looked pretty vertical and the relay arm looked t 90 degrees to the tube. This gave me a result, but not a perfect one.
Can anyone tell me the correct way to setting up steering lock centre so I have even lock left and right?
Many thanks
Jeff
Series 1 has the lower relay arm not at right angles to the top lever, but (for RHD) one spline angle towards the LH wheel. If you kept the rod lengths the same, this is likely to be the problem.
