I am pretty certain it was 1953, with the 86". Prior to that the vent was, in fact, optional, although I think all, or almost all, Australian ones will have the vent.

Was looking at some S1 pics. Noticed early one have a single, full length vent. Later ones have a double air vent. What year did the change.

JDNSW's answer is right in one respect: the change was made in 1953, but to the '54 model year vehicles, 86 and 107 inch wheelbase.
The other obvious differences are:
Dash panel more like a Series 2
Trailing edge of doors now vertical
Recessed exterior door-lock levers
2-litre "spreadbore" engine
