Same here. The motor is hardly high powered and hard to crank over with a decent battery attached. Also less to go wrong

As above. The resistor is an unnecessary complication.

thank you once again - new findings

    1. carby removed in prep for the new refurb carby

    2. found the resistor for the coil in amongst my parts bin

    3. points removed as suggested and a new replacement will be bought

4-5. inside the gearbox prior to fitting, is this normal for the end plate to be curved like this or should it be flat? seems like its supposed to be curved like it is but not sure.

    expecting some more deliveries today.

    gearbox almost in

1-2. after a big lift of the gearbox from beneath the chassis i was able to rest the rear end of the box on a crate and then slide fwd into almost final position. top is good but below the box is a gap. i think the rear of the engine needs a slight lift to slide in. i did use a clutch alignment tool so hoping it should just line up, i did rotate the crank to ensure the gears mesh but will need my jack to lift the rear of the engine first. just glad to have had the box of the floor and out of the way.

hoping within the week should be able to start and drive in the driveway to see if the box is ok and the engine does not smoke or make any funny noises as the cond of both the engine and box are largely unknown. this was supposed to be a budget rebuild but...

IMG_5294manifold_LI.jpg maxresdefault_LI (2).jpgVacuum hose on manifold 300px-HG2020002_LI.jpg Other end of hose on PCV Valve
Joe , this vacuum fitting should have a vacuum hose from the PCV valve in the top of the rocker cover ,if you don't have the hose get a short piece of any sort of hose that is a tight fit over it & screw a bolt into the other end other wise you will be sucking air directly into the manifold & the motor won't start or run .
With the gap on the bell housing to the adaptor housing , it does not look like the input shaft has gone into the spigot bush. You may need to loosen off the bolts around the bell housing & pull the box back a little & wriggle the box while pushing forward until it is even all the way around You need to tighten the bolts evenly all the way around a little at a time just don't tighten one side. If you have had the clutch off than you may not have the clutch plate off centre a little.

Joe, Is there a PCV Valve in the top of your rocker caver I can't see it in your photo it looks like you have just pushed the hose into the rubber grommet , should look like one of these
