Would I be considered mad if i

I’m getting old and so is my 1955 86”...it’s to the point that on a pension I fear driving it much due to parts costs and scarcity........would I be considered to have some sort of brain disease to consider swapping out of it into a later 2a........my logic is is easier in my mind to keep say a10 yr younger car running and actualy use it a lot more for short camping trips around home
    Am I mad?
    Reguards mark

Clarification....I pack a full lunch if the defenders down and I need to do the 60 km trip to the shops

My answer is, YES, you are mad, you have a Land Rover... But I hear you. Pensions are necessary for us older, former taxpayers, but they don't go far. But, seriously, how much more does it cost to keep a Series One running than a Two Alpha? To most of the uneducated they are identical. Why don't you use the 56 for the short camping trips? It would love it, and leaving it behind would be the same as leaving the dog. You may be afraid for it, but it's going to die someday.

I have a reverse philosophy. Keep the Series 1 stuff going and the parts will keep coming, so you owe it to the rest of us!

A Series 1 might realise you enough funds to keep a IIA going, maybe, but the money might be better spent on a more modern car, say a 200TDi Defender, or a Kia.

    My two bob's.

Fair call...got a td5 so can’t see heading the Kia route...I can pick up parts 2a for next to free...a 1955;s1 not so much....and driving in town in a s1 tightens my spincter quite a bit...siting around 80 kms on the highway with bugger all brakes has seen several temporary Australians do extremelystupid things around me.......just a thought at the moment

Heck, didn't know about the TD5. Sure, old Series stuff requires a lot of faith. TD5 not so much.

Plonk the 56 up on here for sale. it'll go.

My bad. And I was funning. I am not really saying sell. That 55 may be worth something for your grandkids, if you are lucky enough to have them...

I responded to your original post, but it seems there are deeper issues here. Good luck with it all.

Maybe swap IIa engine & running gear into the Series I but keep all the original parts. Possibly a Series II full synchro box at the same time.

If it's on Club Permit it's only about $75 for 45 days rego so maybe get a Series II as well

have the car you're going to use, I reckon. So if you'll use a 2A over your S1 then swap over. These cars are meant to be something for us to enjoy, not live our lives worrying about getting parts or whatever.
