Thread: Going to get a new toy

From data plate it is a 1958 CKD 88” starts first time and as stated was still being used to feed out hay and jobs around the farm. That looks like a useful car.I hope you're not going to turn it into a boring shiny seen one seen them all green ornament. Just my opinion of course.

It is planned that it will be cleaned and maybe a coat of clear to help keep the car original, might have to try to stop some oil leaks for roadworthy and maybe the usual brakes and minor corrosion in floor in one place only.
Other than that it is to be enjoyed, this one is for my middle daughter.

Great find but please don't clearcoat it, that would look terrible and it certainly isn't 'original'.

Had mine for about 14 years and nothing has changed, still aluminium showing through very thin paint. It's garaged and even washed occasionally.
Maybe a light polish of the panels but a coat of clear would spoil it.

Depending how it has been maintained it may need a lot of work to pass roadworthy, but that will depend on how strict the inspection is - definitely need to get someone who knows what they are doing with cars of that age even if not Landrover knowledgeable. Check brakes to the extent of pulling the drums off, and unless it has had fairly recent work, expect to replace at a minimum, everything rubber.

At least it is running and in use!

The old girl had a water leak at the rear of the block which I was concerned about so I pulled exhaust manifold off today and while I was there checked exhaust valve clearance. I found two tight one so adjusted them, the internals look a bit carboned up and sludgy in camshaft / valve area but considering the age looks reasonable. The water leak is from a welsh plug at the rear of the block so ordered two new ones as there is one at the front of the block may as well change both now while I can. I have attached a couple of photos the first is of the corroded welsh plug.

Pulled the plugs and gave them a good clean up made a big difference she is running on four cylinders now. I have the exhaust manifold of so it’s a bit noisey.I tried to upload video but it didn’t work sorry.

While the exhaust manifold is off check how flat the sealing surface is.
Mine was blowing badly and I ended up filing the manifold flat, no problems since.
