just going off that pic your box is in 4WD. As others have said you'll need to go between L-H range to disengage it, but without the spring fitted you'll also need to pull up a bit on that rod to get it to pop up. Either that or some brain genius has cut the rod down, but that would seem unlikely.

    Hi Jeff.
My rod sticks approx 90mm above the floor when in 2wd.

If yours is lower, jack up a front wheel and see if it spins freely, to confirm its in 2wd. The 4wd mechanism is not a mechanical shift in and out of gear. It relies on a spring to disengage 4wd when the lever is shifted. If there is load on the gear cog it will not disengage out of 4wd. That is why the shift knob has a return spring on it.

    Thumbs up

    You were both Spot On.
    Many thanks Tony and Chris.

As soon as i pull the rob upwards while shifting it from Low to High a few time, the rod come up is steps. That allows me to put the spring locknut and yellow knob in place. It took bit of lubrication to the mechanism, but after a few runs throughs , the knob would go down and hold and would pop up againput up as soon as I moved from High ratio to Low.
So m vehicle has been stuck in 4x4 mode since I bought it in 2017, and God only known for how long before that.
I do have free wheeling hubs, so no real excess wear.

Fabulous help from this terrific Group, once again.

    regards and many, many thanks

    Hi Tony & Chris,
You were exactly right. It was stuck down, and as a result, had been in 4x4 since I acquired the S1 in 2017 and God knows for how longer before that.

It needed a bit of lubrication as it was quite stiff at first, but after a few manipulations, it was going down and holding and popping up as I moved from High to Low Ratio.
Once I had it up, the spring and lack nut went on with only slight compression, and the yellow knob screwed on easily.

Its all working perfectly now, so thank you so much for the excellent advice.
    regards

I came across 4 springs today whist looking for something else.
    They all measured 90mm long.
