Its definately a Series 1 body, its got the flat sides. It looks just like a series 1 107" 5 door wagon (the one that looks like a kid went nuts with a meccano set), but its only a 2 door. The hardtop looks to be an original item, but ive never heard of it, or seen one and we cant find any photos or info in any of our land rover books. I thought it may have been a 5 door wagon that had been modified, but the hardtop doesnt look like its been chopped up at all, except for the side windows which look a bit dodgy.

It doesnt have a safari roof either, but it does have channels that go the whole length of the roof, but it doesnt look like a modified S2/3 canopy. Its hard to explain without photos.

We were told it was owned by a Rover mechanic years ago and he did all the engine and gearbox "modifications" ie ruined it in this respect. We dont know why it has a series 2 chassis and the current owner has no idea either. Would a series 1 109" ute body bolt straight onto a 109" series 2 chassis?

Cant wait to get some photos of it.

OK....Well, I didn't know there were ever a 2 door station wagon from factory - I'd like to see a photo! Without the safari roof, if it is the real roof, there should be 4 air vents above the non cabin section of the roof.

As far as I know, the 109 chassis from a S1 is the same as the S2.

I doubt very much it started off as a station wagon, what happened to the rear doors etc.

Suspect it is a standard series 1 lwb ute with either a home made top or one modifed from series 2 etc. I suspect the top width is similar between a series 1 and 2 and with the higher sides of a series 1 lwb ute, a later hardtop might even fit around the front doors etc.

I'm with you, Garry. My guess precisely.

OK, quickly went out and took a couple of pics.

Took a closer look at the hardtop, it does not look cobbled together, and the rivets/paint/aluminium seems to match the rest of the body quite well.

Cant really look at the back of the vehicle until the guy pulls it out for us.

Took a pic of inside the hardtop, no safari roof holes.

Another thing with the cab is that there is no bulkhead or backing section behind the front "seat" (a big long bench seat type slab-another dodgy addition!). which i would expect with a ute? unless of course its been cut out, and we cant find this out until we see the owner on the weekend and have a better poke around.

Hope the photos shed some light on this one!

G'day All, I know about this vehicle, it used to belong to a Mr John S in Newcastle, he has had a long connection to Land Rovers, he did all the mods on that one, it does have a Rover 6 (3lt) I think, auto transmission + overdrive that he machined and built himself, last I had heard of it was his daughter had it, but that was some time ago.
Currently Mr. S is driving a much modded RR chassis with a S2A 5 door body on it, hope thats of some help cheers Dennis

Went and saw Cars 2 with my son today, and spotted this and thought it was cool.
