    Is this good or bad

    Today I was completing the grime and sludge removal of my old Grey motor, we were going great guns with the old dunny brush and it snagged the dip stick, I pulled it out and the oil is white Yikes! its water, off came the valve cover its clean as a nut no sign of water there, obviously she has picked up water but from where, water and oil wont mix really unless they are run through the motor correct? it hasnt run in few years so I suspect a knackered head gasket, the heads gotta come off to do the stem seals anyway, means sump off and a clean out, may as well check the big ends while there and clean the oil pump screen, every turn I take things get more and more invovled with this old thing, if it had the creamy oil whizzing around surely there would have been traces and sludge up top in the rockers?, ah well least its a Holden motor no big deal. Your gonna beat me with your machine Troy I am afraid!

    Holden Grey? If it is you cant kill a grey! When I was younger I tried!. I"d be suprised if there is much wrong there. They are not real prone to this unless ill treated. Condensation over time could cause this. Holden donks are cheap and plentifull if you change to a red. I would recomend 186.

    It's only about $200 for gaskets, Welch plugs, rings and seals for the older holden motors and a bit more for timing chain and sprocket.

    So I would just do a rebuild with a hone Andy, just an extra days work after the clean up.

    It can be caused by condensation so I wouldnt stress to much about it.

    I am hoping its just condensation, I can in house rebuild it while its in situ, knock the ridgeout the bores and hone it out, should be fine with new rings and gaskets, There was a reason I read why they used Greys and it was to get around a problem with brakes in the old days, though today a Red could go in, I like the old Greys they go ok and very quiet as a rule, hopefully shes ok, its cost me a fortune in degreaser and dunny brushes

    I'm not sure if the greys have expansion plugs in the head if they are gone the oil can get in to rad if engine runing. But sit overtime is posible to fall into sump. I agree, a basic rebuild may cure it.

    Having a smaller bore, the grey has a better stroke to bore ratio, when looking for better bottom end torque. This is what you want in a Land Rover, not heaps more power.

    grey motor water leaks

    I had a Holden EJ ute with the grey motor .

    Grey motor tricks .. there are one or more welsch plugs BEHIND the engine side cover on the engine . When a plug goes , water leaks directly into the oil .You have to remove the large side cover that covers the valve push rods .

    I've seen this happen a few times on grey motors .. it confuses people as you cannot see the welsh plugs from the outside .

    Thanks for that tip, when I shift the head I will replace them all regardless with brass plugs, cheers
