    Streak Update

Wont say I have been really busy getting in the old chook, truth is she is coming along at a slow pace, cleaning the engine bay has taken so long, why people cant spend 3 bux and degrease there engine bay once in a while is beyond me, an engine caked in grease and crud runs hotter then a clean one but the old Grey motor is once again Grey, I have removed all evidence of Mr Lucases doings, got my new harness half made. As many accessories have been stripped , scrubbed and painted as I can.

I have repaired the seat box cracks, the next jobs will be to shift the master cylinder and resevoir and fix it, even though it works it wont hurt. Going to fit a Series 3 Non boosted master cyl resevoir the old tin can job has had the richard.
The pedal setup is strange and the pedals need rebushing do these exist still?
Then I need to clean the fuel tank out and refit it all.

I have to ask as I havent had a look under it properly, the gearbox has a neat little dipstick set up to check the oil, how do we add oil to the box does it have a side plug or can it go down the stick hole?
And the radiator scares me abit, it seems really tiny, I am going to yank the fan blade and throw it away and fit a big thermo in front of the radiator, has anyone upgraded an S1 radiator to something more sizable, S2 or 3 2.25L perhaps?

Thats where we are at the moment.

The pedal setup is typical of most cars for the first fifty or more years of motoring. Bushes can be made by anyone with a lathe.

The gearbox should have a removable filler held by a spring clip for adding oil. There may or may not be a level plug. The filler and dipstick were discontinued some time after the level plug was added, I believe.

The radiator is large compared to the one originally fitted to that motor (mind you, they overheated regularly) and if in reasonable shape should be perfectly adequate. Before you fit an electric fan, I would fit an alternator, although you are probably already planning that.

    Streak pics

This how the engine now looks, the last time I posted a pic of this engine it was just muck and crud and 40 years worth of rubbish, there is nearly 4 hours work with a long handled dunny brush to get it like this

A front shot after the radiator was removed last night, now I can straighten the grille panel.

This is were we are with the cabin, sanding, scrubbing and more sanding, I need to get the dash painted soon so I can think about refitting the modified dash board and begin the rewire. Still lots to do here.

These were taken this morning, were still cleaning really, the years of neglect reflect in the time taken to scrub stuff, there are previous pics on here somewhere which show the engine in the first visited state.

Just behind the gearbox in that interior photo, is a round black cover with a spring clip over it as JD says. I believe that is where the gearbox filler is.

The ball and chain and the billy lids took off to the Show I stayed behind thought I might invest a few hours in the Streak, was under the front end scraping and wire brushing I discovered she has a bodgey bolt in the front spring hanger on one side, the spring looks to be twisted in the saddle so I think a bush has collapsed, are these the steel outer with a rubber inner type bush that has to banged in after you dig out the old one? easily got?, she apprears to have two worn tie rod ends on the very front link, I can find these easy enough I hope Series tie rod ends the same across the board? Are the S1 And S2 front bumpers similar?, the scrubbing and scraping never ends!!!

The bushes are steel inner and outer sleeve with rubber between. I think that except for the one in the chassis they are the same as the Series 2/3 and readily obtainable.

Tie rod ends - there are two types, with an unthreaded part on the shank for the tube to clamp to (Series 1 to late Series 3) and threaded all the way (late Series 3 to current Defender). The two types must not be interchanged as the clamping is not effective with either an unthreaded tube clamping on thread or a threaded tube clamping on unthreaded shank. There have been fatalities from this. Both types should be readily available, just make sure that what you are using fits the tube (and check the ones you have), as it may not have the originals.

S1 and S2/2a/3 bumpers are not the same although "sort of" interchangeable. The S1 bumper is shorter and narrower - and because it is flimsier, it is less likely to be found in good condition. They are very scarce, but I think Lotzalandies mentioned some being made at present.
