    Defender Oil Housing...

    Hello all, as you might know from previous thread im having dramas getting an oil filter housing for my series 1, i have been keeping an eye on ebay for the housing and there is a bloke over in the UK selling a Defender spin on oil filter housing (ETC5347) with the adaptions for Series 2 and 3, my question is would this also be suitable for a series 1 engine, thanks Anthony...

    The simplest answer is no. It's a different filter and housing, and on the opposite side of the engine. If your Series 1 is a really early one (80"), I also seem to recall the filter being an extra cost external mount unit. Those are apparently very hard and expensive to come by.

    From memory, I like the way Series 1 filters are fitted. The bolt enters from the top (opposite to the 2.25's) and stands vertically (the 2.25s stands at an angle, making an oil change an extraordinarily messy affair).

    Try asking fwd motors. I know they do the Rocky Mountain spin-on filter conversion for the 2.25s. If they don't have one, they may know somebody who does. Also, try asking on the UK Series 1 forums. They've got all sorts of bits available over there that we don't.

    Please excuse my last post, I seem to be suffering a bad case of "Foot-In-Mouth".

    The "Series one" filter I was thinking of was actually that fitted to the 2.6L 6cylinders. Very different.

    In LRO magazine Spring 08, there is a reply to a Practical LRO question which deals with just this problem. Yours being a '51, it will have a bypass filter (about the only thing I did get right in the last post). Land Rover part number 216322. The UK Series 1 Club (01278663449; Land Rover Series One Club) has a spin on adapter available for the pre-1954 Series 1s, for about $200 Australian by the time it gets here.
