    Series 1 88 Colours

I am likely to start stripping my "Baby" (57 Series 88) down for restoration early next year. One of the first decisions I am going to have to make is what colour to make it - it is currently Bronze Olive Green - a colour I am not all that fond of nor the darker green.

Does anyone know what the common colours were available on Australian (mine was CKD so built here) swb series 1s in 1957. I am aware of the greens, and I think a grey and maybe red for the fire engine versions, but I am not aware of other original colours that Australian cars were painted.

If anyone has any pics of Australian cars in other original colours I would appreciate they be posted.

    Thanks

I think you've covered most of the colours Garry. I've seen pictures of SAND and PEARL but not sure if they were original.

I have also seen a nice Slate Blue 88" in a UK mag but not sure if that was a change too.

I like the dark green - suits it. But if you are thinking of trying out some colours have a play with this Paint My Landy!

I know its a S2 but you get the idea!

I had an 88 that was a much darker green with a brown, almost khaki tinge, which appeared to be original, but apart from that one the only colour I remember them being was bronze green. This is apart from special colours for particular users, such as yellow or orange for the Department of Supply, yellow for Civil Aviation and red for the PMG and a different red for fire engines.

In addition there were some directly imported examples, and these may have been any of the factory colours. Wayne Ellard has a sand coloured one, for example, which is possibly fully imported.

In the mid fifties, colour choice was not considered a factor in utility vehicles, and by and large, for quite a few years almost all swbs were green and almost all lwbs were grey in Australia.

Not a great shot but this is the Blue I mentioned - not sure if it's original.

    Looks great IMHO.

Thanks Sleepy that looks a lot like a colour available in the UK - certainly close to the colour used by early RAF (or maybe coastguard) series 1s in the UK.

I do like that colour though.

So for Australian colours it looks like dark green or bronze olive - with the grey for the LWB.

I think that is the RAF Blue, but could be as Garry says Coast Guard. Whatever the case i like it particularly on the 107" and 109" with a white or off-white truck cab top.

There is also a very similar Colorbond which are generally in-stock from Protec Pty Ltd who have factories in most states.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    hi there

Another colour and looks original - 1954 S1.....(I also think Diana has one the same colour)

PS I know the post was about 88's but thought seeing the question was asked - what about 86"s

    Wayne

PS about to re-paint it and would love to know the original colour (might help when getting it mixed)

    88" colours

Does anyone have one in grey I don't want to have a fleet of green land rovers and it would be good to see more 88" colours

I'm cheating, but you could pretend it is an 88" in this shot

My 86" is also the same colour as Waynes (see "Len" threads). It is certainly an original colour srayed at time of manufacture as it is the same colour everywhere (top of chassis rails, inside various hidden holes etc) though could have been a special order etc. Wayne, I gave up on tying to find a paint code and took a good sample down to my local paint shop where they trial mixed a custom mix to match the paint sample. I haven't sprayed any yet so I can't comment on how good the match is yet. I have the colour mixing list that they used if you want it.

    Cheers,
    Chris
