Ever had one of those days...

    hi there

As the title surgested - have you ever had one of those days where every thing you touched just turned to s--t........

Well it all started with a simple task - change the fan belt of a Series One Land Rover Fire Engine .....it was still running but made a strange noise at idle. With further obstervations found the belt perished and cracked....

Most would say quite a straight forward task - but it wasnt to be.

To remove the old belt took the easy task of cutting it - well first of all all the generator bolts were stuck tight (get that with a 50 year of vehicle) - well after a little CRC the generator was loose. Went to put on the new belt put a little tension on the generator and strike two - put the screw driver through the welsh plug.

Well to get to the welsh plug - remove the spare tyre - remove the bonnet - remove all the fire-hoses which wrap around the bonnet - remove the generator - topped of with removing the Govenor (Fire Truck) - drain the water etc etc.........and the list goes on?

Well parts should be here tonight and I hope the simple task of changing a fan belt gets a little eaiser.......PS the welsh plug sizes are 1 15/16"s anyone know the belt size.........

Well I hope others had a better day than mine - have to have the Fire Engine ready for the Christmas pagent tomorrow evening......

I know the BOSCH belt No. 15A0980 fits OK .... 15 = 15mm wide and 980 = 980 mm outer diameter . Super crap auto had them .. but destocked them and no longer carry them.. But they would get them for you on order I suspect. . I've got one on my motor and it's lasted OK ...

As for bad days .. well.. the car is British .

    Mike,
I thought the belt was meant to be 1000mm long. How is the position of your generator?

I only buy my belts from CBC. They are made in USA. I did try and get some genuine Dunlop belts, but Dunlop would not reply to my E-Mails.

Well put - why do we do it....

But some good news - welsh plugs done and generator bolted back on just waiting for the belt (A friend in towns dropping one out later or in the am)

    Hi Aaron

The generator sits OK .... no problem... would 20mm make that much difference ? The Bosch belts are about 1/3 rd of the cost of a certain business in Melbourne who sells Series 1 fan belts .. The original width was 5/8" .. 15 mm is slightly narrower.. but you hardly notice it .

CBC is consolidated bearing company ?

PS I spotted you in the radio day pics weekend at DOCS farm .

    Hi there

Thanks John - but still awaiting the belt, I do have a second hand one but would prefer after all the hassels to put on a new one.

Hopefully the wife will get some pictures.

As for the belt I am taking the old one down to Autopro today to get a spare....
