The brackets you mention are to hold the windscreen when it is in the down position.
When folded out, with the windscreen flat over the bonnet, the brackets clip into the bonnet hold down clips. This way the clips are now holding both the windscreen and the bonnet.
The correct rear lamps for the '55 should be the "pork pie" style with the wide metal base. There were no blinkers on the '55 except for the North American spec. vehicles which flashed the stop light. Reversing lamps didn't arrive on Series Land Rover until the SIII.
