That is an original horn - well is at least the same as fitted to both my 57 88s. On the 88 the horn is actully fitted to the bonnet - at the rear passenger corner.

You could be correct about the later 88 and 109 vehicles but the horn on my 86 was the same as on the 48 - 51 except on my 86 it was tapped into a hole over the blanking plate for the LHD steering box. Although you never really know what's original half a century after it was built do you?

Its been 25 years since I sold my 86 so I cannot speak on them with any authority. Certainly for an 88 it looks correct and both mine have the horn in the bonnet. I do remember seeing the horn on an 86 at Cooma being bolted up near the radiator.

Whether it is the same as a 80 horn I have no idea but it does look like one that is on an 88.

Hi Diana,

I do have a very nicely tapped hole in the blanking plate that looks like it been used to mount something. Were all the chassis tapped in this way or only if it was to mount the horn?

I have only noticed it on my 86, not on the 109 S1 chassis I had or any of the 80s I have so was not sure if it was genuine or someone's modification.

Garry: The horn you mention is the same as the one I had on the 109 S1 chassis/front end I bought and it too was mounted where you said on the bonnet. The horn type from your 88s was also on my Series 2 88" so that was probably introduced somewhere between my 1954 and 88/109s
