Thread: tyres for Arfa

Originally it would have had 6.00x16, but many were fitted with 6.50 or 7.00. The original wheels would have been 5" rims - check them, should be stamped on them somewhere. If they are 5", 7.00 is as wide as is advisable. If it has lwb wheels with 5.5 rims, you can fit 7.50, but while the larger diameter improves clearance it makes it effectively higher geared, which means you will be using the gearbox more, and the larger tyres will mean a bigger turning circle, none too hot to start with.

I am not sure what tyres are available at present, but I suspect that inch sizes other than 7.50 are pretty hard to find, and you may want to look at metric tyres. It will be better all round with radials, so I would not fit crossplies unless you are searching for exact authenticity.

I am ideally also after some 6.5x16s for my 86" also but have not had any luck in finding any.

Seems that the sizes available are 6.0x16s or 7.5x16s.
At the Orange Swap Meet last weekend I was talking to a bloke from Mudgee that imports vintage tyres. He had a catalog with several 6.0x16 tyres that could be suitable for a Land Rover. Website is Old World Lamps Home page , he said that he could scan a page from his catalog and send email it if requested.

My 86" has 7.5x16s on the front at present. I hate them, they rub on the springs on full lock and give the vehicle a shocking turning circle.

Good luck. I am not up to the tyres stage yet (I have a bare chassis yet to be painted), but would be interested to know how you go.

Thanks for the advice - will keep an eye out for suitable 6.50 radials.

In the meantime, I want to get Arfa running again, but don't want to damage anything by driving with the current tyre mix (7.50s front and 7.00s rear).

Brakes are also a problem and our place isn't flat so would like to try a safe slow crawl in low range for starters. Can I use low range in 2wd?

I do have freewheel hubs, but saw comment in a previous thread that hubs should be locked if 4WD selected and moving. On current tyres, I'm thinking this would wind up the transfer case.

I am not familiar with early series 1s, but the later 1s and all other series (excluding the S3 stage 1) have the option of 2wd high, 4wd high and 4wd low. When you engage low range the transfer case is in 4wd despite the plunger lever popping back up.

Thanks Mark - that's how I thought was, too.

Which is a bugger because now I have to either fix the brakes or find new tyres before I can safely go for a drive - assuming I can get the engine going, that is.

Is this what owning a S1 is meant to be like?

I was looking as well and got this from an online tyre seller....

I recommend you put 205R16 on instead of 7.50R16. The 7.50R16 is way to big.

Tyre size.

I personally haven't had any problems with crossply tyres but I guess it depends on your driving style. Be aware that some of the radials you will be offered as a 'direct replacements' will lower the gearing of the vehicle.

I frequently drive in low range with the front hubs dis-engaged. This will effectively be two wheel drive low range. Just don't tromp it hard in first gear.
