    pistons

Is there anyone in Australia still able to supply 1.6ltr petrol or 2ltr diesel pistons? I don't feel like having my backside reamed out from the UK suppliers who are most likely buying them from India.

JP Pistons in South Australia makes them ( 1.6 and 2 litre petrol ) .... but they are not cheap . They make pistons for a huge variety of older cars ..and rings too .

A set may set you back about $500 plus rings about $120 or so ..

They have a web site ..easy to find on Google .

REPCO was making them back in the 1960's.. but the experts have told me the REPCO version are dubious with faults .

Don't want to risk name and shame but do your piston research very carefully.

If you can get them get the originals. (IMO)

I got a quote from JP for pistons for a 1928 Dodge Standard Six. I ended up buying from the USA. I got pistons, pins, rings, main bearings, gaskets, timing chain for less than the quote for just the pistons.

I talked to JP pistons a year or so ago and they did not do
1.6 pistons as they did not have the dies for them only 2 litre
ones. Things might have changed though. They could not even match up a set of rings..........Mark

    My mistake

I know they do 2 litre pistons ( siamese bore type with small pins ) cos a friend has had them fitted for many years with no problems at all..

They do supply 2 litre rings as I got a quote for a set ..about $125 I think. 3 years ago , but they said they cannot supply the correct oil control rings ....just plain type , which is next to useless .

My mistake re: the 1.6 pistons .. if they havent got the tooling , then they won't make em .

You'd think a company somewhere would do a run of 10,000 or more pistons for us all ..instead we are paying exhorbitant prices for NOS stuff .

My engine re-conditioner bought 1600cc pistons for my engine from a spare parts firm in Melbourne. They are NOS but for the life of me I can't remember the business's name. I do remember looking at their website but they didn't reply to my email. I think they are a firm made up of 3 or 4 firms almagamated; try a google search of English spares in Melbourne, or ask our Victorian cobbers for ideas,

    Cheers Charlie

PS $550 for a set of four including rings and gudgeons.

Auto Surplus in Mitcham ..... they never answer emails..better to ring .

BTW in many cases its possible to re-use pistons . If the ring grooves are worn , they can be machined and spacers fitted between the ring and groove . I've had this done to a Ford flat head V8 and Dodge 6 side valve pistons ..with good results .

I've been told you can also machine oversize pistons down to a smaller size ... if you have say a standard or + 10 bore motor , its possible to machine down + 30 or 40 pistons to suit . May only be possible with certain makes .
