 PUSH BUTTON -- STARTER SOLINOID
 PUSH BUTTON -- STARTER SOLINOID
		G'day,
over the last couple of weeks now since iv had the landy running, ive noticed my starter push button have been a problem. Now i really have to push it in hard to make it work but now its almost impossible to work it usually takes about 10 pushes to the actual button before anything happens. Does anyone know what the problem is? has the thing %$#T itself?
my only idea is to buy a new one! as i don't have any spares.
Cheers,
Chris

G'day All, Check it with a multi-meter, if it's OK it could be not earthing thru the switch, scratch a little paint off and try again cheers Dennis

This was the first part I restored on my 80" way back in '86, because it had seized from sitting outside in the rain for years I presume.
I prised open the back of it (where the sheetmetal is folded down) with a small screwdriver, whilst holding it in a vice and keeping my hands well clear so as not to be stabbed.
Inside it was very dirty and the shaft had rusted to the body from memory; so I pulled the innards out and degreased them. The copper contacts I placed in a glass and filled up with lemon juice straight from the tree. In the morning they were clean and then I reassembled the solenoid and packed the cavity with vaseline to stop it corroding again. Where I had turned up the flange, I heated it to a dull red with an oxy torch so that the metal wouldn't work-harden and snap off when the seam was closed (I did this before reassembly of course).
Dressing the flange down is a piece of cake with a small hammer and a suitable drift, while someone else holds it still; I used the jaws of a vice as an anvil,
Cheers Charlie
