ill give it a try, it could very well be the problem.
and i had also painted the entire switch, which may contribute to the problem too.

i had a look at the Starter button yesterday and found the problem to be the push rod. that small nut that is on the shaft when i removed the black button, it was turned all the way to the end of the thread so i unwound it back 3/4 pushed it in and it works fine. i also scratched some paint on the switch unit and on the bulkhead to make sure there's a proper earth.

still cant believe this little nut cause the problem! but happy to have it sorted out!
