My plan is to use the rubber type as long as i can clamp it down securely over the ends.. is this a reliable setup running so close to the motor?
Yes, if it is fuel hose
Also, how does one usually attach/take off this nylon hose.. heat or something?
I have never had to replace one, but this is how I would do it.
Forgot to mention, this is for a 2.25 petrol

The idea, is that you order part number 557432 (engine A-H)/550471(J on), but I rather doubt that it is available.
Another approach would be go to a hydraulic supply place with the original plus the bit you cut out and see if they can make you one.
