    Non-standard valves-2.25P

    G'day all,
My 2.25P's 7:1 head is getting cleaned, tested etc. The bloke doing the work said that the inlet valves are not standard for the 2.25P. The exhaust valves match the book though. He's called a heap of places and the only place with a matching part number for the inlets is in Brisbane, who won't tell him what the valve is from, apart from it being off another Rover engine. I didn't think to get the part number. They are $38+GST each...

Have any of you had/seen a different valve fitted to these engines? Would there be any reason to use a non-standard part apart from maybe availability?

While not answering your specific question, the engine shop should be able to match up a suitable valve to suit your head.

For instance, my Minor with the sidevalve engine now has Mazda 626 exhaust valves fitted. The head & stem were the right size, they just needed shortening. It was a few years ago but it was nowhere near $38 each.

There is no good reason I know of to change the type of valve, except as you say, availability. And this may be the clue. I wonder if the valves are from the 2.5 litre version of the motor. While this was never sold in Australia, it remained in production until 1990, and it may well be easier to find parts for, if you source from the UK.

The part number for the inlet valve is 277593, aka ERC7150. They're GBP2.29 from LRSeries, which is $A3.94, plus shipping of course.

You could have them here in 10 days.

You could count on doubling the UK price in Australia, but 10x . . .

    Try Land Vehicle Spares 02 4774 1741.

    Thanks Scott, John, Peter,
The engine shop tried LVS, Karcraft, All 4X4, some places that specialise in engine valves and plenty of others, hell they even tried Land Rover themselves.
The shop said that the regular valves were around $25+GST anyway.
The shop will call me in the morning with the part number and might cancel the order if I think its extortionate.

The engine has previously been fitted with 40 thou oversize pistons, so its had a bit of attention before.

Well I should be getting the head back this arvo. I now know that arse-rape feeling others have experienced getting mechanic stuff done.
$700 for a clean, pressure test, skim and replace valves.

Should have put the diesel in, was cheaper to buy, fix and get all the other bits for than to fix a freakin' head core plug.

    Holy expensive motors, batman!

They charged me much less (as discussed) for much the same (sans valves, but they did the stem seals) only a few months ago... I wonder why the price hike?

EDIT: This was a rant, brought about by paying nigh on $800 to get do a $300 head recondition, due only to some leaking core plugs and thinking i'm better off getting it cleaned, tested and skimmed if needed. One of the core plugs freshly installed, leaks, and I have only turned it over by hand. Compression doesn't feel great either but I don't know if its my mind playing tricks on me or not. Either way, something is wrong...

If you are looking to get your engine parts reconditioned, and don't wish to use this same vendor, PM me.

Just to put this to bed, I took the removed valves to Land Vehicle Spares, which the head shop claimed to have called to get parts from.
Checked the part numbers, yep, got them in stock, pretty much always have them in stock, regular 2.25P part, $30ish for one type, $19 for the other type, prices to me not trade, with GST. NOT $38 EACH+GST.
At least I sorted the weeping core plug issue, even though I shouldn't have had to.
