The only time I really noticed the higher ratio was towing a tandem trailer with a 109 or rangy on it! LOL If you have a Salisbury diff youi can use low range to take off (free wheel hubs unlocked) and reversing. I had a suffix c 2a main box which is stronger than the s3 box. I would have another high ratio t/case in any series landy. My mate has one in a s1 88 with a 2 1/4 and loves it.

    high ratio t/case

Sounds like a plan further down the track! (money)

As the current gearing is the 202 seems to still be settling back into being used for periods of time. Im finding that its behaving much better at about 3150-3200RPM now after about 60 miles of driving in total. So once i stop everything in the cab rattling, 95kms should be fairly comfortable (as comfortable as a series will get).

If it drinks petrol then ill live with it.

P.s. Should be heading up for a decent 4wheel drive session in a few weeks time! Finally able to test the old bus out, hopefully beat a few hilux's and patrols...hehe

    Hi everyone.

I am looking to get a lower low range for my '71 2a.

Would it be wiser to replace the entire transfer case with a complete suffix B version, or just modify the internals of the current case with the correct gears? The gearbox is suffix B.

From my understanding, this will give a 1st low ratio of 48.8988 (39.762 at the moment) and 2nd low ratio of 30.15426 (24.5199 at the moment). High range ratios will remain unchanged, is this correct?

Sorry about the pedestrian questions, but numbers scare the bejesus out of my poor little head and I would just like to confirm I am on the right track.

    Cheers,

    Sam

The difference between suffix B and later T/cases is the intermediate gear
and the low range slider gear on the ouput shaft. These are the same ratio gears that are supplied with the Ashcroft and others high ratio transfercase conversion, but can be purchased separately. The spur gear on the new intermediate gear has wider teeth than the original suffix B intermediate gear, so may be slightly stronger.
    Wagoo.
Edit. your 71 model should not have a suffix B gearbox unless the original one broke and someone fitted an old box.
A suffix B box has a first gear ratio of only 2.996:1 vs 3.66;1 for later boxes ,and your original 71 t/case has a low range ratio of only 2.35:1, so you probably only currently have a low 1st gear ratio of around 33;1

Sorry wagoo my mistake it's a suffix G box, not B. I am not sure of the current T/C's suffix though but I'm quite sure it's an original later suffix model
