some assistance please with Fairey/MAP capstan winch

i recently purchased a fairey capstan winch to put on my series 2a although it did not come with a suitable mounting plate.

would any one be so kind as to post some pictures and dimensions of their capstan winch mounting plates, also the thickness of the plate would be good too.

i am to make one this weekend, just want to do it right the first time. thanks. marcello

Fairey and MAP capstans are very different animals. The Fairey should have the letters F, W, and L cast on the top of the bollard, whereas the MAP is usually plain-faced. The drive pieces from the crankshaft are very different and, unless they came with the winch, they are nigh on impossible to find. I once turned down a capstan winch and roller simply because it didn't have any drive bits with it. To me it was a $500 paperweight.

There are even differences between Series 1 and Series 2 MAP capstans. S1 models have four drain grooves in the case at the base of the bollard, whereas S2s have only two. Also, the drive boss arrangement on the crankshaft (pins-and-holes dogclutch) is opposite between the two models. Sorry but I can't supply any photos to explain it all.

I was under the impression that MAP amalgamated with Fairey and all the later capstan,s were marketed as Fairey with only a slightly different casting on the top.

The ones that are different animals are the Aeroparts which have the plain top.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Aeroparts! Yeah, sorry, foot-in-mouth disease!

I thought that MAP stood for Mayflower AeroParts, but I've frequently been wrong before.

One of my friends in Katherine has an ex-military 1968 109 pet4 with a Fairey capstan, and it has FWL cast onto the top. I'm not sure it was a factory fit, but nothing is the same between that and my S1 Aeroparts capstan.
